The LFOs

Three LFOs, each on up to four settings. A setting keeps the value you gave it; the LFO moves the sound around it.

SHAPE, DEPTH, POLARITYLink to this section

SHAPE is the LFO’s wave, one of seven. DEPTH is how far it moves its targets: 0 is off, and at the top it reaches the whole range of each one. POLARITY is which way: BIPOLAR around the setting, UP only above it, DOWN only below.

LFO 1, LFO's second page: SHAPE SINE, its RATE and DEPTH, POLARITY BIPOLAR; the sine across the strip above, over one turn, a glint where the LFO is now
LFO 1LFO twice: a slow sine, and its glint.
SINE
a smooth swing, up and down
TRIANGLE
straight up, straight down
SAW
up, then back at once
RAMP
down, then back at once
SQUARE
high for half a turn, low for the other
RANDOM
a new value each turn, held
DRIFT
a new value each turn, glided to

RATE: free, or on the beatLink to this section

RATE is one knob. It runs free first, from a turn of 200 seconds up to 10 Hz, shown as a period (2.9 S, 1:40) or in hertz (1.5 HZ). Past the fastest free value it goes onto the grid: 16 BARS, 8 BARS, 4 BARS, 2 BARS, 1 BAR, 1/2, 1/2T, 1/4, 1/4T, 1/8, 1/8T, 1/16.

On the grid, an LFO follows MIDI clock when one comes in, and TEMPO (GLOBAL, K1) otherwise. MIDI Start puts the synced ones back to the top of their turn.

The targetsLink to this section

The page after each LFO sets what it moves: TARGET 1 to 4, on K1–K4, each OFF or one of forty settings. The four move together, by the same amount.

An LFO is on while DEPTH is above 0 and at least one TARGET is set. LFOs on the same setting add up.

The forty, by track, after OFF. On a TARGETS page each name wears its track’s colour: the drone’s and the whole mix’s white, GLINT’s ice blue, the bass’s orange.

From any page: LFO held and an encoderLink to this section

Hold LFO and turn K1, K2, K3 or K4, on any page: the setting under that encoder goes onto LFO 1, then LFO 2, LFO 3, then none (turned back, the other way), into that LFO’s first free TARGET. An LFO’s DEPTH at 0 comes up to 25 %. The header says where it went: FILTER > LFO 2, > NO LFO, LFO 2 FULL (its four TARGETs taken), or NOT AN LFO TARGET. Let LFO go without turning anything and it opens its pages, as ever.

Around the settingLink to this section

A setting keeps the value you gave it, and that is what a scene saves, with the LFOs’ own settings. The LFO moves the sound around it.

An LFO runs freely and continuously while it is on. Keys do not trigger it or start it again: it goes its own way under whatever you play.

GL BRIGHT and GL PING take effect at each strike: an LFO on them changes the next notes. GL LEVEL, GL SPACE and the rest move as it goes. FRASIL glides between the LFO’s steps, in about 25 ms, so a SQUARE or a RANDOM steps softly rather than clicking. The bass’s FILTER, RESONANCE and DRIVE glide too (about 7 ms): an LFO on BS FILTER sweeps smoothly, a wobble.

They cost the processor next to nothing: they update a hundred times a second, outside the sound.

On the screenLink to this section

When an LFO moves a setting, its gauge shows a small ice-blue mark where the LFO has it now. The value, and its own mark, stay where you put them.

On an LFO’s pages, the river strip shows the LFO itself: its shape over one turn (four for RANDOM and DRIFT), as deep as DEPTH, from where POLARITY puts it, and a glint where it is now. It is slate grey while the LFO is off.

On a TARGETS page, each name wears its track’s colour: GLINT’s ice blue, the bass’s orange, the drone’s and the whole mix’s white.

A few to tryLink to this section

  • PEAK up on PARTIALS II, and a slow SINE on FORMANT: the drone sings one overtone, then the next, up and back down.
  • SINE on BS FILTER, on the grid at 1/8: the bass wobbles on the beat.
  • RANDOM on GL BRIGHT, quicker than the notes: each glint struck brighter or darker than the last.
  • DRIFT on TIMBRE, a turn of 1:40: every hundred seconds, the drones glide toward a new colour.
